Recently, soft game ready leather has become the most popular baseball glove leather because of its quick break-in period. The most common way to achieve this game ready leather is to use an oil-tanned leather that has been milled. The soft leather works great for players that are not playing 50 –100 games a year. For the serious players that are practicing and playing on an almost daily basis baseball gloves constructed with the softer leather will not hold their shape. The gloves don’t tear up; the oil-tanned leather is strong but because the leather starts off soft the leather begins to break down and the glove becomes floppy. Keeping laces on your glove tight can help reduce this problem. Traditional baseball glove leather is firm and will require break-in. The advantage to firmer leather is that it holds its shape better. Because the leather is firmer the gloves will not become floppy as quickly as similar gloves constructed from softer leather. Traditional baseball glove leather will soften up in the flex points while keeping the gloves integrity. For serious players that are playing almost daily this traditional glove leather is the to go. Our oil-tanned leathers get lightly oiled and milled: this softens the leather and gives some hides a pebbled look. Our OT leathers are firmer than some manufactures oil-tanned leathers so expect a short break-in period for your glove. Our Curried Retanned Leathers are traditional baseball glove leathers. The CR leathers are double tanned. First they start with a chrome tannage, and then they go through a secondary vegetable retan process to firm the leather and increase durability. Finally, our Curried Retanned Leather is hand burnished with ultra lightweight oil. |
